Homemade Sloppy Joes

When it comes to  beef recipes, this one just jumped right to the top of my favorites list.

I did some serious recipe testing  to ensure that no ingredient overpowered another here. (And that each ingredient was necessary. Trust me, everything is in perfect harmony.)

Manwich vs. Sloppy Joes

  • Manwich sauce comes in a can and contains a combination of tomato paste, water, a few varieties of sugar, distilled vinegar, salt, dried bell peppers, dried garlic, chili pepper, spices, and a few other ingredients.
  • My Homemade Sloppy Joe Recipe was carefully created to ensure the perfect balance of flavors:
    • Tomato sauce, a little ketchup, and some apple cider vinegar for just the right balance of tomato flavor and acidity.
    • Yellow mustard adds depth of flavor, brown sugar adds a hint of sweetness, and Worcestershire sauce adds umami to balance it all out.

How to Make it

See recipe card at bottom of post for ingredient quantities and full instructions

Brown the top and bottom of the ground beef prior over high heat before breaking it up and cooking the middle. The texture will be similar to that of a hamburger and it’s very good in Sloppy Joes.

A pound of ground beef in a skillet before and after being cooked.

Cook and crumble the beef and add the onions until softened. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add the tomato sauce and tomato paste.

Add the remaining ingredients and heat until thickened. Don’t let the sauce reduce too much, especially if you’re going to reheat leftovers. Serve with toasted hamburger buns.

Crock Pot Method

  • Prepare the ground beef, onions, and garlic on the stove top as instructed. Drain any excess grease as needed.
  • Add the meat to the Crock Pot and stir in remaining ingredients. (Minus the buns.)
  • Cook on low for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally if possible. Serve on toasted hamburger buns.

Storage

  • Store in an airtight container and refrigerate for 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Optional: Add a little more tomato sauce and water or beef broth if you would like it saucier once reheated.

Homemade Sloppy Joes

It is super easy to make Homemade Sloppy Joes from scratch! This delicious sauce has a perfect blend of sweet, tangy, and savory flavors. You'll never buy a can of Manwich again!

Ingredients

  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 lb. ground beef, 85% lean
  • ½ yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 8 oz. can tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons yellow mustard
  • 2 Tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 Tablespoons packed brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons hot sauce, optional*
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper

For Serving

  • 4 Hamburger buns, toasted

Instructions

  • Add the oil to a large nonstick skillet over high heat.
  • Add the beef but don’t break it apart yet. Allow a dark brown crust to develop on the bottom of the meat, about 4 minutes. This gives it a hamburger-like texture.
  • Flip the beef and allow a crust to develop on the reverse side.
  • Once browned, reduce heat to medium-high.
  • Add the onions and break the beef apart. Allow the beef to finish cooking through. Drain any excess grease if necessary.
  • Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  • Add all remaining ingredients and stir until heated through and thickened slightly. Don't let the sauce reduce too much, especially if you're going to reheat leftovers.
  • Serving suggestion: Spread butter over the top and bottom of your burger buns and toast them on a griddle or large skillet prior to serving. This adds nice flavor/texture and prevents the buns from becoming soggy.
  • Serve on buns and top with cheese if desired. Serve with potato wedges!

Notes

Crock Pot Method

  • Prepare the ground beef, onions, and garlic on the stove top as instructed. Drain any excess grease as needed.
  • PRO TIP: I like to use this slow cooker as you can brown meat right on the stove top with it.
  • Add the meat to the Crock Pot along with all remaining ingredients. (Minus the buns.)
  • Cook on low for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally if possible. Serve on toasted hamburger buns.

Pro Tips:
  • I use Texas Pete or Frank's Hot Sauce!
  • Feel free to top each with a slice of American cheese, or work some Velveeta cheese into the meat mixture itself!
  • This recipe is in The Cozy Cookbook on page 78!
  • Optional Additions: Bell Peppers, Celery

  1. Outstanding ……no more package or can for us!

  2. Yum…my family has made this multiple times. It is my teenage boys and little girl’s favorite. It has a rich flavor.

  3. These are absolutely delicious. I made it for my family first, hoping this would be a good recipe for sliders; I am hosting a weekend late lunch with heavy appetizers.  The tang from the apple cider vinegar balances the sweetness of the brown sugar. Its a grown-up sloppy joe kids will also enjoy. Move over Manwich, these are a winner!!

    • Hi Ellie, I ❤️ hosting appetizer style parties! These homemade Sloppy Joes are perfect for the occasion. I’m so happy you like them, thanks so much for sharing!

  4. Hi Stephanie – I was looking for something to fix for dinner, and I came across your sloppy joe recipe.   I made them tonight and they are really delicious!  We will have these again!  Thank you for sharing this recipe; it’s delicious.

    • Hey Lynne! I’m so so happy that you enjoyed this!! I took the recipe testing very seriously for this one, lol. I wanted the perfect balance of flavors! Thanks so much for your review!!!

  5. I am going to admit that I normally use Mamwich.  I tried this recipe tonight and my kids and husband loved it!   They asked when we could have it again which is the first time ever!  Since I doubled the recipe I used less onion and garlic (my family isn’t fond of either) but used everything else.  For Hot sauce I used Frank’s.  Once I browned the meat and added all of the ingredients I put it in a crock pot for 2 hrs on low and all of the flavors combined beautifully!   It was super easy and delicious! Thank you!

    • Hi Sherri! I’m so glad that you enjoyed these Sloppy Joes! I feel like you’ll never go back to using a can again, that’s usually how it goes! 🙂 Really glad that your family loved it too. I really appreciate you taking the time to leave a review and let me know how it went, it made my day! -Stephanie

  6. Hi Stephanie
Thank you for sharing your Sloppy Joe recipe. I have been hoping to find a great recipe so my husband who swears by “Manwich” had a change of heart. I absolutely cannot eat ketchup…would it make a huge difference in the taste if I omitted it? You know I am a huge fan of all your recipes and look forward to trying all of them. It’s time for your own Food network show! Thanks again and Blessings to you and your family.

    • Hey Donna! You are absolutely fine to leave out the ketchup, GO for it! I hope you can persuade your husband to kick the can to the curb! (Hahaha like my alliteration?! 😂) ENJOY!!! XOXOXOXO

  8. Once again “Ms. Cozy Cook” your recipe did not disappoint! Delicious flavors and balanced tastes. I doubled the recipe to ensure I had leftovers. I followed the recipe exactly as written.
