Guys, meet Toby. Toby is my sweet little morkie who deserves to eat homemade dog treats all day, every day. Of all of the dog treat recipes that I’ve made him over the years, (including homemade dog cake), these might be his all-time favorite, because they’re packed with so many of his favorite things.

My inspiration for these began the other day when I dropped a big ol’ strawberry on the floor. Since Toby is my personal robotic vacuum, he polished that sucker up before I could even attempt to bend down and pick it up.

I panicked and grabbed my phone for what was probably my 50th random Google search that day:

Can Dogs Eat Strawberries?

Yes. Dogs can absolutely eat strawberries. They have lots of vitamins and minerals that are actually very good for dogs, but they’re also sweet, and should be served to dogs and puppies in moderation to prevent stomach aches.

Best Kind of Peanut Butter for Dogs

  • All-natural peanut butter without added salt or sugar is best for dogs.
  • Do not use light or sugar-free peanut butter, as those may have artificial sweeteners (such as xylitol) which is toxic to dogs.
  • I like to use Teddy Smooth All-Natural Peanut Butter, which can also commonly be found in grocery stores.

Flour Alternatives for Dog Treats:

Grain: Barley, Buckwheat, Millet, Oat, Pea, Quinoa, Rice, Sorghum

Non-Grain: Chickpea, Coconut, Hazelnut, Lentil, Potato

Storage

  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
  • Or freeze for up to 3 months, removing them as you need them and letting them come to room temperature.

The Best Dog Treat Molds

These dog treat molds hold the shape perfectly, and makes the process even faster because you don’t have to roll out the mixture and cut shapes, (although you could)!

These are the same molds used for this recipe!

Storing Homemade Dog Treats

  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
  • Or freeze for up to 3 months, removing them as you need them and letting them come to room temperature.

Dog Treats as Gifts:

  • These treats make fantastic gift ideas! These are the dog treat molds that I used in this recipe.
  • These are even smaller treat molds and are perfect for giving in these little canisters!
  • Treat-making and gift-giving is also a great activity for little ones, (with your assistance of course!)

  1. Was wondering can I substitute blueberries for the strawberries?

  2. Hi, I’m about to order the super cute molds.  It seems like, to use the molds, the mixture would need to be more liquid-like to place in the molds.  Do you just pat it into the molds ?

  3. Hi – I found the dough to be really sticky & it was very messy trying to put them into the molds. I did use an organic all natural peanut butter which was very sticky though. Mine came out darker & more soft – are they supposed to be crunchy? I even baked them longer. Regardless they smelled great & my dogs loved them. I just wished they were crunchy so they lasted longer for gift giving.

    • Hi Colleen! I think that the consistency you ended up with was mostly due to the peanut butter, I’ve used creamier versions before and I think that’s why mine came out a bit differently. I’m happy that your dogs still enjoyed them! If you’d like to try another recipe without peanut butter, my apple carrot dog treats are a big hit!

  4. Thanks for sharing! It would be fun to make this with kids!

  5. These look so good they could be people food ! Can’t wait to make!

  6. I attempted to make these today. The dough was super sticky. I added flour but didn’t want to add too much. I was trying to roll and cut them. Not sure what I did wrong. I think they will be easier to make in a mold and will try again when I get the ones I ordered.
Our pup likes them though but was a disaster when making them. Ha.
Should they come out hard? Or are they more soft? Just seeing if I cooked them long enough. Thank you for the healthy pup treat recipe! Hopefully, next time goes better. 🙂

    • Hi Kristie! Hmmmmmmm… mine wasn’t sticky, (although I agree that the molds make it much easier to work with varying textures as opposed to rolling it out and using cookie cutters)… I’m wondering if the kind of peanut butter that you used is what made it extra sticky? My peanut butter was super smooth. Hmmmm! I wish you better luck next time!!!!

  7. I just made these but and I used the mold idk maybe I did something wrong they didnt come out light like your picture did mine came out dark. But I guess it all depends how my pups like it just waiting for them to cool down 😊

  8. Hi Jill,
I made these for my pups and my friends pups too. If I  use a deeper silicone such as a bunny should I cook it longer? Also should I  mash the strawberries next time ? I just  Cut them up into small pieces . Thanks

    • Hi Pam!!! Awwww that’s so nice that you made these for your friend’s pups too! My friend recently brought me some homemade treats that she made and it touched my heart, so sweet! Anyway! I think a deeper mold probably will call for a little bit longer cooking, maybe 5 extra minutes or so? And then I’d leave it in the mold as it cools too. (A bunny! That is so cute!) – There is definitely no harm in mashing the strawberries and might help them cook more in that deeper mold. Enjoy!!!!

  9. Can you tell me what kind of peanut butter you used. When I google raw peanut butter none of them actually say “raw”.

  10. Hi. Was going to make the strawberry, bannana dog treats but my dog cannot have wheat flour. Can i use white flour instead ? Oh… these sound great , any recipe for humans ???? Thanks for any help. Have a good one.
