Glazed Ham (Oven and Crock Pot Friendly!)

This Glazed Ham Recipe is brushed with honey butter and baked in the oven or the Crock Pot before being brushed with a sweet pineapple brown sugar glaze! The ham is juicy and flavorful with a perfectly caramelized top.

Serve this with my cheesy scalloped potatoes, twice baked potato casserole, or corn casserole!

Glazed Ham

If you’re wondering why you would go through the trouble of making glazed ham from scratch instead of using the packet of glaze that typically comes with the ham, you’ll figure that out quickly when you taste the difference! You’ll never go back to using a packet. It doesn’t even come close to this recipe.

The ham is brushed with a mouth-watering honey butter mixture at the beginning, and a deliciously sweet Brown Sugar/Pineapple glaze at the end. Can you think of anything better?

How to Make It

See recipe card below this post for ingredient quantities and full instructions.

  • Brush honey butter mixture over the ham and inside the crevices of the slices. Add pineapple juice to the roasting pan and place a roasting rack and the ham on top. Cover loosely with foil and seal the edges around the pan.
  • Bake at 275°F for 15 minutes per pound of ham. Set the ham/rack aside and top the ham with half of the brown sugar mixture.
  • Add the remaining brown sugar mixture to the pan drippings/pineapple juice. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer, bubble gently until thickened and reduced. Brush desired amount of glaze over the top of the ham and broil for up to 5 minutes to allow the top to caramelize.

How Long to Cook a Fully Cooked Ham

  • Oven: 13-15 minutes at 275°F per pound of ham. (An 8-lb. ham takes about 2 hours.)
  • Crock Pot: 4-5 hours on low for an 8-9 lb. ham.

How Much Ham Per Person

  • Plan on 3/4 lb. of ham per person for bone-in, and 1/2 lb. per person for boneless.

How to Make Ham Glaze From Scratch

  • This glaze is made by combining pineapple juice, pan drippings, brown sugar, white sugar, and spice combination of cinnamon, ground clove, paprika, nutmeg, allspice, and ground ginger.
  • The mixture is whisked together in the roasting pan, brought to a boil, and reduced to a simmer. It bubbles gently and thickens/concentrates until the desired consistency is obtained.
  • Finally, it’s brushed over the ham and broiled until caramelized.

Pro Tips

  • These instructions are for a ham that has already been cooked/smoked, which is marked as such on the label.
  • SAVE the ham bone! It’s perfect for making pea soup, ham and bean soup, and lentil soup. You can freeze the bone to use another day!
  • Check out my collection of ham recipes to make with leftovers, and side dish recipes to serve with this ham.

Storage

  • Store in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months. (Leftover sliced ham freezes well and is great for casseroles, soups, and omelettes!)

Glazed Ham (Oven or Crock Pot!)

5 from 12 ratings
This glazed ham recipe is brushed with honey butter and baked in the oven or the Crock Pot before being brushed with a sweet pineapple brown sugar glaze!

Ingredients

  • 1 bone-in spiral sliced half ham
  • ¼ cup pineapple juice, see notes
  • 4 Tablespoon Butter, melted
  • 2 Tablespoons Honey
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon mustard powder

Sugar Glaze Mixture

  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground clove
  • 1/8 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Pinch allspice
  • Pinch ground ginger

Instructions

  • Note: These instructions are for a ham that has already been cooked/smoked, which is marked as such on the label.
  • Make room for the roasting pan in the oven, you may need to move a rack down one notch. Preheat oven to 275 degrees.
  • Pour the pineapple juice on the bottom of the roasting pan and place a roasting rack on top.
  • Rinse the ham and pat it dry. Place it on the top of the rack.
  • Combine 4 Tablespoons Melted butter, 2 Tablespoons honey, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, and ½ teaspoon mustard powder. Brush it over the top of the ham and into the crevices of the slices.
  • Cover the ham loosely with foil, making sure to seal the edges around the pan. Bake for 15 minutes per pound of ham. (8 pounds = 2 hours.)
  • Combine the glaze ingredients while the ham bakes and set it aside.
  • Remove the ham from the oven. Take the foil and place it on a heat-safe surface. Place the rack with the ham on top of the foil. Sprinkle half of the sugar glaze mixture over the top of the ham.
  • Transfer the roasting pan (with drippings) to the stove and stir in remaining sugar glaze ingredients. Whisk to combine. Bring it to a boil, then reduce to simmer. Whisk continuously and let it bubble gently until desired thickness is obtained. Remove from heat and transfer the glaze to a heat-safe bowl.
  • Place the rack with the ham back in the roasting pan.
  • Brush desired amount of glaze over the ham, you don’t have to use it all.
  • Broil at 450 for up to 5 minutes to allow the top to caramelize, watch it carefully so it doesn’t burn. (Alternatively, you can use a heating gun to caramelize the top, link in notes.)
  • Serve with side dishes of choice, including potato salad, mashed potatoes, twice baked potato casserole, and corn casserole.
  • Have leftovers? Check out all of my ham recipes here.

Notes

I am able to obtain ¼ cup pineapple juice from an 8 oz. can of crushed pineapple. A sieve helps with this. If needed, you could use chicken broth instead.

The ham is done when the a meat thermometer reads 140 degrees when inserted into the thickest part.

Crock Pot Method: Cook on low for 4-5 hours. Transfer to a foil-lined baking sheet or roasting pan to broil at the end once glaze is added. You’ll need a 7-8 quart Crock Pot to fit an 8-9 lb. ham.

  1. Merry Christmas Eve! Do I have to use a rack or can I sit the ham directly in the pineapple juice? Thanks for all you do!

  2. This recipe is how I found Cozy Cook !! Brushing the liquid in the crevices makes a huge difference. It came out perfect and will be using this recipe for Christmas again this year.

  3. Your recipe turned out to be the bomb!! I had my ham before hand which wasn’t spiral so I cut slits across it. The sugar mixture put on top before the glaze gave it a nice crunchy taste after broiling. Let my glaze get a little too thick but it spread out when broiled. I ended up using all the glaze. My family is going to love this. I know I do and putting this recipe in my favorites! Thank you for sharing!

    • You’re very welcome Linda, sounds like you did a great job with this one! My husband loves when I make this, it really does have so much flavor from the glaze😋. Thanks so much for the great review 🩷

  4. I am nearing the 11th hour. I have a spiral ham in the freezer for Sundays dinner. Both the crock pot and oven method works for me.
    Which is your preferred method?

  5. I made this today and it is absolutely delicious. Thank you for sharing!

  6. Will this recipe work on a ham that is not a spiral ham

  7. This is the recipe we used yesterday for our Thanksgiving ham.  Absolutely delicious and very flavorful! Everyone loved it! Never again will I use the glaze packet that comes with the ham.
