I have been obsessed with Pizza Hut’s personal pan pizzas since I was in like, third grade. And I haven’t grown out of it a bit! I’m psyched to have this recipe, it’s definitely a keeper. I’ll tell you about making this dough ahead of time, how to freeze it, what pans you can use, and I’ll even throw in a Copycat Pizza Hut Pizza sauce recipe!

You’ll have everything you need to know so that you can nail this pizza at home too! Let’s do this.

Pizza Hut Dough Ingredients

  • All-Purpose Flour
  • Olive Oil
  • Active Dry Yeast
  • Dry Milk- Omit if you don’t have it
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Cornmeal- Optional. I’ve successfully made this with just some olive oil on the bottom of the pan.
  • Butter- Optional. I like to brush melted butter on the finished pizza crust for even more flavor.

Water Temperature for Pizza Dough

  • The temperature of the water that you use should be “warm“, or between 105 and 110°F.
  • A candy thermometer can be used to test the temperature, otherwise just use your best judgement, the water should be warm but definitely not anywhere close to hot.

Size of Pizza Hut’s Personal Pan Pizzas

Pizza Hut’s pizzas are six-inches in size.

  • These are the six-inch pans that I used, you’ll get six pizzas of that size with this recipe.
  • You can also use eight-inch pizza pans to make three pizzas.

Making Pizza Dough Ahead of Time

Pizza dough tastes even better if you make it ahead of time.

  • Once it’s finished rising, cover it with plastic wrap.
  • Refrigerate it for up to four days.
  • Let it come to room temperature before baking it.

Freezing Pizza Dough

Pizza dough freezes very well and makes for easy future meals.

  • Make sure the dough has completely risen.
  • Roll it into a ball and cover it with plastic wrap. Freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Let it sit in the fridge overnight to defrost prior to using it.

Freezing Pizza Sauce

Extra homemade pizza sauce is great for freezing.

  • Pouring the sauce into ice cube trays makes it easy to remove portion-sizes from the freezer. (Here’s a visual)
  • Frozen pizza sauce is best if used within 6 months.

Now you can make your favorite Pizza Hut personal pan pizzas from home! This dough comes together easily and can be made up to 4 days ahead or even frozen for future use! Add your favorite pizza toppings and enjoy every bite of that golden, buttery crust!

Ingredients

Copycat Pizza Hut Personal Pan Pizza

  • 1 1/3 cups warm water, 105-110°F
  • 1/4 cup Non-fat dry milk, okay to Omit if you don’t have it
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 4 cups Flour
  • 1 Tablespoons Sugar
  • 1 package Active Dry yeast
  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil for dough, plus more to grease pans.
  • 2 Tablespoons melted butter, optional
  • 8 oz. Mozzarella cheese, Grated
  • Your favorite pizza toppings

Copycat Pizza Hut Pizza Sauce

  • 15 oz. Tomato Sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1.5 teaspoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 bay leaf

Instructions

Pizza Instructions

  • Combine the sugar, dry milk, and yeast in a large mixing bowl.
  • Add the warm water and mix well.
  • Cover with plastic wrap and let it sit for 5 minutes.
  • Add the salt and oil and stir to combine.
  • Mix in the flour and stir until the flour is absorbed and a dough is formed. -The dough will be very sticky, this is good, don't add more flour.
  • Use a stand mixer with a dough paddle attachment to stir for 10 minutes. You can also knead by hand on a flat surface.
  • Divide the dough into equal parts and roll into balls. (3 balls for
    8-inch pans, 6 balls for
    6-inch pans.)
  • Place the balls of dough in a warm place, (*see notes), and let it rise for an hour and a half.
  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  • Take the risen dough and use a rolling pin to roll them into 6 or 8-inch circles.
  • Use a paper towel to spread a bit of olive oil around the bottom and sides of the pizza pans, or sprinkle with a little bit of corn meal.
  • Place the rolled dough into the pizza pans. No need to create a crust with your fingers, just leave the dough perfectly flat on the bottom of the pan, the crust will rise in the oven.
  • Top the pizzas with pizza sauce, desired toppings, and shredded mozzarella cheese.
  • Bake for about 15 minutes, until the cheese is hot and bubbly and the crust is golden brown.
  • Brush the crusts with melted butter if desired and serve!

Sauce Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil, then decrease the heat to medium-low and let it simmer with a lid slightly cracked for 30-45 minutes, until desired thickness is obtained.
  • Yields 2 cups. Any additional pizza sauce can be refrigerated for up to three days, or frozen for 6 months.

Notes

*If it's not particularly warm in the house, I'll heat my oven to 325 degrees and place the covered dough on the surface of my electric stove to rise. The heat from the oven helps create a warm environment that's great for dough-rising!

  1. Tastes great, especially the sauce.  Dough was not hard to make . Kept I in fridge for 2 days before use and still worked well.  I will say, I had 6 inch pans and split the dough into 4 portions.  The crust was still VERY thick.  Tasted great, cooked well , but very thick.  Wished I would have put more toppings on to balance the thick crust.  Will make again, though.

  2. I made your crust and sauce and OMG !! Yay Yay Better than Pizza Hut around here.. !!
This is my go to for life.. !! I even order the aluminum pans, 30 of them the disposible one’s, But I won’t dare to throw them away, I’ll wash them bad boys and reuse.. I have Grandson’s.. !!
Thanks so much for these recipes.. You’re the Best..

  3. I made this today and it was a hit with everyone, including my 7yo who struggles with flavours and textures. The only change I made, was to use 12-inch cast iron pan. I divided the dough into 3 and rolled one into 10 inches. I’ll use the rest tomorrow but will add bacon to the sauce. Thank you.

  4. Turned out excellent. Divided into dough balls for two bigger pizzas. Added a little garlic salt and oregano. Brushed crust with butter like you said and added just a little garlic to the butter. Husband just loved the pizza! Thank you for a great recipe! 🙂

  5. Can you give me gram/ tsp measurements for the yeast please?

  6. If I plan to make ahead should I refrigerate before I shape into the individual pizzas?

    Thanks!!

  7. I have tried several different recipes and this is the best. Nailed it!! Absolutely perfect!

  8. Hi, might be a silly question but I was wondering if you could clarify what you meant by ‘tomato sauce’ in the ingredients…is it crushed tinned tomatoes?? Thanks

  9. Hi Stephanie,

I’m making this pizza dough now because, like you, I love Pizza Hut pan pizza. It’s my favorite. I was wondering, you have butter in the dough ingredients listed as optional, would this be a substitute for the Olive oil or in addition to the Olive oil? Also, I used my bread machine to do the kneading. I followed steps 1-4 above and added the ingredients with the flour to my bread machine. I meant to knead for 10 mins, but forgot (I got sidetracked). It started as a ball of dough, but 20 mins into the kneading, it turned into soup. I turned off my machine, dumped the soupy dough onto my butcher’s block and had to add some flour to work the dough. Not sure what happened, but I’ve never had a dough ball turn to soupy dough through a kneading process. I’ll let you know how the pizza turns out. Thanks, John

    • Hi John, I’m guessing the dough was also really sticky as well? This is what happens when dough gets overmixed, and adding extra flour to compensate can make it dense, unfortunately. I hope it turns out for you! That’s the only problem with stand mixers… it’s easy to get side tracked. As for the butter, that’s optional and can brushed onto the crust once it’s done baking… but it’s not a substitute for the olive oil.

  10. I recently learned about Pizza Hut’s Beyond Piazzas and have just had my first Pizza Hut pizza in several decades. It was good, but I always find the toppings too light, particularly given the hefty dough, so now I want to make one at home.

I found this a bit confusing:
“I’ll heat my oven to 325 degrees and place the covered dough on the surface of my electric stove to rise. ”
Are you saying you’ll heat the oven leaving the door open so it increases the ambient room temperature?

As Seen On…
