As far as healthy recipes go, this is by far one of my favorites. My husband and toddler both love it. My daughter used to only eat the filling but now she loves the lettuce part as well!

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 white onion, finely diced
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
  • ½ teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Sriracha, Optional
  • 8 oz. whole water chestnuts, drained and diced
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 head butter lettuce

  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add the chicken and cook until browned and cooked through, crumbling as you do so. (About 5 minutes.)
  • Stir in the garlic, onions, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, ginger, sesame oil, sugar, and Sriracha. Stir occasionally and cook until onions are soft and translucent, about 2 minutes.
  • Stir in the chestnuts and sliced green onions, salt and pepper and heat for an additional minute.
  • Spoon 3-4 Tablespoons into the center of each lettuce leaf and enjoy!

If you don’t have (or like) ginger, sesame oil, Sriracha or chestnuts, this recipe is still delicious without them! Ground turkey is a great option in this recipe as well.

  1. Hi The Cozy Cook,
I love, love this recipe. I forgot to buy hoisin sauce. Looked up and made my own. This time I made it with chicken. Last time I made with ground turkey. My hubby had weight loss surgery, so I will modify or substitute certain things. But you are so happy and amazing. Thank you Stephanie. It’s like having my own chef. I have made many of your recipes at least 2x a week. Thanks again 😋

    • Hey Dawn!! I am SO glad that you loved this recipe and PROPS on making your own Hoisin sauce, that is dedication! I bet it was so tasty! Thank you so much for your kind words and support, it’s SO appreciated, always! -Stephanie

  2. Where is the sauce for these? I don’t find it.

  3. Did you use yellow or white onion? List towards the top without measurements says yellow, but the actual recipe with measurements says white. Thanks! Can’t wait to try them!

  4. These are most excellent and very easy!

    • Hey Stacey! I’m so glad that you enjoyed the lettuce wraps! I know, I’m always shocked at how quickly they come together. These are perfect for this time of year. Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a review! -Stephanie

  5. I made exactly as recipe stated, was DELICIOUS! Thank you so much .was easy to make ,especially in this hot weather we are having right now. Just like PF Changs❤️

  6. Second time making this dish. Even my picky son liked it.

It was difficult finding the ground chicken during these times, and I do prefer the ground chicken…delicious!!!

    • Denise, I’m so happy that you enjoy these lettuce wraps, thank you SO much for taking the time to leave a review, I really appreciate that!! -Stephanie

  7. Under ‘storage’ you have written the filling can be “stored in the fridge for up to 3 months”.  This is obviously a mistake but you should change this information just in case someone takes it literally.

  8. This was delicious! I had ground turkey, and a shallot, and I added a red pepper with the meat. Thank you for this recipe. It was great and I will use this again.

    • I’m so happy to hear that!! Excellent! Thanks for sharing your additions too, sounds delicious! Thank you so much for taking the time to come back and leave a comment, you’re the best! 🙂 -Stephanie

  9. Easy and Budget Friendly! I made this for my brother’s birthday. The hubs and I offered to give my brother and his wife the afternoon off and then make dinner for all. We fed 10 rambunctious, semi-picky eaters and it was a hit. I made a pot of brown rice for those who simply wanted a rice bowl or an additional side. These chicken wraps family friendly, delicious, and budget accommodating! I forgot the water chestnuts at the store and didn’t want to run back out so I substituted with chopped carrots and it turned out great! We will definitely enjoy this again

    • Heyyy Lindsey!! WOW such amazing compliments, thank you so much for sharing your comments but also your ideas for serving! I really appreciate it and I know that others will too! -Stephanie
