How rewarding is it to make little dog treats for a little pup in your life?! I’ve been making these treats for years, both for my own dog and for my friend’s dogs. They have everything your little pup could want.

Let’s get into some questions that you may have about the ingredients!

Best Kind of Peanut Butter for dogs:

  • All-natural peanut butter without added salt or sugar is best for dogs.
  • Do not use light or sugar-free peanut butter, as those may have artificial sweeteners (such as xylitol) which is toxic to dogs.
  • I like to use Teddy Smooth All-Natural Peanut Butter, which can also commonly be found in grocery stores.

Best Kind of Flour for Dogs

If possible, I recommend using Almond flour, because it’s healthy and easy to find at the grocery store.

Healthier Flour Alternatives for Dog Treats:

Grain: Barley, Buckwheat, Millet, Oat, Pea, Quinoa, Rice, Sorghum

Non-Grain: Chickpea, Coconut, Hazelnut, Lentil, Potato

Can Dogs Have Milk?

  • Just like people, some dogs can digest milk easily and with no issues. Other dogs have trouble, or may be lactose intolerant. This resource goes into greater detail about that.
  • In short, be cautious about introducing new foods to your dog for the first time, and always consult a vet when in doubt.

Dog Treats as Gifts:

  • These treats make fantastic gift ideas! These are the dog treat molds that I used in this recipe.
  • These are even smaller treat molds and are perfect for giving in these little canisters!
  • Treat-making and gift-giving is also a great activity for little ones, (with your assistance of course!)

Author: Stephanie

Ingredients

  • 1 cup natural creamy peanut butter *See notes
  • 3/4 cup nonfat milk
  • 1 large egg or 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 cups Almond flour *See notes
  • 1 Tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/3 cup oats (either whole-rolled or quick oats are fine)
  • 4 strips cooked bacon roughly chopped

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 325F degrees. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, gently mix the peanut butter, milk, and egg together with a large spoon or spatula. Switch to a whisk to make sure no lumps remain. Add the flour and baking powder. You may need to turn the dough out onto the counter and use your hands to work in the flour. Mix in the oats and chopped bacon. The dough is extremely thick and heavy.
  • Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out into 1/4" thickness. Cut into shapes or insert into these dog treat molds (I love these)! Arrange on the baking sheets. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until very lightly browned on the bottom. Remove from the oven, and flip the treats to bake the other side for 10-12 more minutes.
  • Allow to cool completely before serving to your pup. Store at room temperature or in the
  • refrigerator for up to 1 week. Treats freeze well, up to 2 months.

  1. Almond milk?

Stephanie, if I am uncertain about the lactose issue, does almond milk bake up the same?  My boys love ice cream and Greek yogurt treats, but to be on the safe side,,,

  2. All the dogs know love these. I tried freezing the dough, but it turns really dark. The cookies look burnt even though they aren’t. Any thoughts as to why? Thanks.

    • Hey Tanner! You’ll definitely have better luck baking all of the dough and then freezing the baked treats that you don’t need until later. Then just let them defrost at room temp! So happy that your dogs love them! YAY!! -Stephanie

  3. Hi, Stephanie!

I’m assuming that the bacon is NOT cooked before putting it into the mix??? Oreo loves sweet potato wedges baked to a pretty crunchy, chewy consistancy! He will love these, I know!

    Thank u!!!

    • Hi Cathy! I would actually recommend cooking the bacon first, JUST in case- I should have made that more clear, I’ve updated the recipe. Thank you, and enjoy!

  4. I will try this recipe as soon as possible. I hope my puppy, Thor, will like them.

  5. I would like to try these homemade bacon 🥓  treats for my finicky little Chewy.  I just want to clarify the nonfat milk.  Is that the powdered dry milk?

    • Hey Peggy! I have high hopes that little Chew will LOVE these treats, (Chewy is the cutest little name ever, by the way.) For the milk, it’s actually regular non-fat milk, not powdered 🙂 -Enjoy!! Let me know what Chewy thinks!!

  6. With all the wonderful treats for our fur babies, what about cats, mine are so finicky, they eat a little of everything and all of nothing! No matter what I have tried, at least frm grocery store, they are not crazy about any one kind, dry food is not the problem, it is the ‘wet’ food, all this fish, chicken, turkey, and beef in gravy is not the answer, they are not crazy about it, end up throwing out more than they eat!

    • Hi Mary!! I need to look into trying to make some cat treats sometime, maybe I could help you out! 🙂 My sister in law has a few cats- lots of people might like to try homemade treats for their kitties! 🙂
